This is my final version of my thank you card to my daughter Faye and her family for the Christmas presents they gave to me. A necklace and earrings, a journal and note cards all with a peacock motif were my lovely gifts this year. I used ink pen and some metallic gel markers on watercolor card stock to make my artwork. I think she will really like it, I do! :-) Below is the card before I added color. I would be interested to know which version you prefer. Market research for future projects ya know!

Yesterday I was really fighting with two paintings I was working on. For the life of me I could not get anything to work. Today I awoke fresh minded and decided to take the advice of past instructors who would say "If you mess up keep going...you can't mess it up more and you just might save it." Another common phrase was "If you make a mistake, make it look on purpose."
It's amazing how sometimes you have to take a step back in order to take a step forward. I revisited the bird painting I was working on and when I finished I wanted to dedicate it to someone who has inspired me at different times. (Though she may not even know it)

Progress Pic - The muse did not show up today

The muse did not show up today, but I did. I attempted not one but two paintings tonight and I just wasn't feeling either one of them. I took the "better" one downstairs to show my husband and asked him what he thought. I could tell he wasn't being completely honest with me when he nodded and said "cool.". He fessed up and I told him I didn't like it either.

He suggested not posting them but since this Challenge isn't about painting 50 GOOD paintings in 50 days I am going to post at least one of them. I'm a horrible judge of my own work anyway. Sometimes the paintings I like least are the ones people connect to. If I had any idea how this worked I'd be pretty rich by now.

Blogging about recovering from Artist's Block while in the midst of it is ironic. I can't help but remember Julia Cameron's book the Artists Way, where she says recovery is not linear. Sometimes for every step forward we take two steps back.

At least I showed up. Hopefully the muse will be back tomorrow.

I spent an enjoyable evening preparing this "Thank You" card for my daughter Lucy and Grandson Alex to thank them for the Christmas gifts they gave me. One of their gifts to me was a big box of all kinds of socks. Some were black and some were white. But there were also Christmas socks, socks with polka dots, socks with hearts, socks with penguins,socks with diamonds,socks with kites,socks with rainbows,socks with cupcakes,socks with polar bears,socks with cherries. A whole lot of really fun socks! I had told her I needed socks when she asked what I would like for Christmas...what a great surprise, a great big box of socks! Designs inspired by Zentangles.

Some of you may not know this but I am a Gamer Nerd. I love RPG's and one of my "artist hobbies" is painting miniatures for fantasy games like Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder.

My friend commissioned me to paint his Pathfinder character's mini and so I'm counting it as 8/50 of my paintings since I never made any rules about the paintings being all two-dimensional. The description I was given for painting this guy was "very white skin, tribal tatoos on his face, and he should look like he's engulfed in flames." Since the sculpt is actually for a wraithlike ghost and not flames persay I had to improvise a little bit by letting the colors tell the story rather then the miniature.

The cool part of doing this was after tweeting the Progress picture on Twitter I actually got commissioned to paint another mini by one of my Twitter followers! How cool is that? Gotta love teh interwebs!

The Chinese New Year of 2012 is the Dragon (element water)! I painted this guy with larger brushes and used some dry brush techniques to achieve the wispiness of his beard. I'll admit I fought with him a few times and I'm still not sure I tamed him. I finally decided to leave well enough alone before I mess up the painting all together.

I love Asian mythology and culture and will humbly admit I am far from mastering this ancient subject in painting. I hope you enjoy anyway.

The Daily Paintworks Challenge for the week of January 8- 14 is to paint a picture of your breakfast. Well, this was not my breakfast because I couldn't cook in the studio! I actually had 2 slices of bacon, two fried eggs, and a healthy juiced fruit and vegetable combo that was made from 1 beet, 1 carrot, 1 apple, 1 orange and a one inch square of fresh ginger. Oh, not to forget the large cup of Colombian coffee "straight"! I haven't posted for a week because my children celebrated Christmas with me on the 7th. of January. I was busy last week with some extra shopping and wrapping, and preparing or picking up food for the weekend. So the ham in this picture is part of a Honeybaked ham we had. I still have too much leftover, even though they each took some home. Ham anybody?!

I decided to go the opposite way with this next piece from my last one (Rainbow Trout) because I felt my last painting was a little overly fussy. I got some feedback from another professional watercolorist who reminded me of many tricks of the trade I already knew but had forgotten to use. He said "Use a big brush and bigger paper if you can. Bigger paper was out because I've already ripped up my supply into 1/4 sheets so that I can be sure to have enough to complete my challenge.

Another thing he reminded me of was to use a watercolor board. He reccomended masonite but I already had a board I had made in college out of a piece of pine covered in shellac. The waterproof board holds in the moisture of the paper better and helps it dry more evenly. Once I remembered these techniques I went back to an old subject (or non-subject) of mine..the abstract.

It's actually difficult to make good Abstract - Non-Objective art. Usually when I make non-objective paintings I am explorting color relationships and form.

I'm hoping as I get more and more in touch with my creativity again I will make more vivid paintings along this vein.

I wasn't nearly as productive today as I would have liked but I managed to start and finish this painting all in the last bit of the evening. This painting spoke to me and told me of the fish within it, leaping against the current of a wild river. I used to fish every summer with my grandparents when I was a kid and later with my Uncle and Aunt as an adult.
I love the taste of fresh caught trout, foil cooked over a campfire for breakfast in the morning. Whenever I see trout it immediately brings me back to those wonderful summers in the mountains.

It's Friday! I've completed 10% of my goal to paint 50 paintings in 50 days! It feels SO good! I am going to try and crank out some more paintings this weekend that way I can get a chance to substitute teach sometime this week. I'm missing the social interaction being holed up in my studio all week. Which is why I LIVE for your comments on each painting. So please don't hold back. Even if you hate it. I'd like to hear from you.
This new painting didn't start out having anything remotely to do with my past work "Wishing for Sun" when I first started it. So when it started to have similarities I figured "Why not? Maybe it will become a series." So I pushed it to looking closer to the older work. I'm not that into florals but hey, I let the paint tell me what it's supposed to be. I like that these "florals" are very figurative.

Allowing the process to unfold is a huge part of overcoming Artistic block. There are so many opportunities to be self-critical and for me an excuse to back out. The 50 Days project is perfect because it forces me to do the work regardless of the outcome. I have to ignore the snide comments in my head as my inner critic tells me I am a hack.
There was once a time when I even had to create an alter ego in order to create art. I assigned all the bad paintings to the alter ego.

One of my friends asked me "How do you crank them out so quickly and so well?"

There is actually more then one answer to that, but what it really boils down to is me having a little ADD which ironically allows me to Hyperfocus, a little OCD which allows me to work a little obsessively, and a touch of perfectionism (ok a lot of perfectionism). That all combined with a serious dose of impatience (which is why I do NOT work in oils) makes a perfect amalgam for working with Watercolor!

I try and have a couple paintings going on at a time. That way if my ADD kicks in and I get bored, or some paint needs to dry I can work on something else.

I'm starting to feel good about this. I've gotten a lot of great feedback and encouragement on my different social networking sites. All this sort of stuff just helps me. Ultimately what helps me the most is to remember that my paintings are not ultimately meant for me. They are meant to go out into the Universe to bring Joy to others.

I did it! I made my first completed painting in over a year!! And the best part is I like it and the feeling made me want to paint more. There are a few things I had to do to get the painting done.

I had to clean out my studio which had become a catch all for "you name it" clutter.
I had to "Just DO it" as the Nike Ads always say.
I had to keep working through it even when it got to that "ugly stage"

Beginning today I will be starting a personal challenge called 50 Paintings in 50 Days. I've attempted this challenge in the past and the most I've been able to manage was 30 paintings in 50 days. The nice thing about the challenge is that it has helped me break out of creative blocks because the task is simply to paint and not judge the results. I will be posting each painting on my blog and of course every painting will be for sale.

The way I look at it is even if I only get 30 paintings again I will still have 30 more then if I never undertook the challenge. One last thing...the challenge is not "one painting a day" it's 50 in 50 days. That allows me to go a day or so without posting and lets me complete more then one painting a day as well.

I painted Santa from life in a portrait class. His real name(don't tell the kids!) is Rich. He is tall and thin and has a wonderful smile. Santa was wearing his Santa hat but had a green or blue flannel shirt on in November, when this was painted. As some of you might know, when you paint a human from life, the sitting is about 3 hours long with 5 minute breaks every 20 minutes. Well, when you are sitting and staring at something across the room on the wall for three hours, you are not going to be holding a smile! I also exaggerated the creases and lines. I love the way it seems that Santa is already tired when he thinks about all that needs to be done before Christmas Eve. We all know that feeling. I had this painting made into postcards for Christmas and had "Already!?" printed down along the bottom. I wish all my friends at Paint Party Friday, and at The Daily Paintworks and Contemporary Fine Art International a Merry Christmas.

This is one of my two holiday cards for 2011. I painted this one in watercolor and had Seasons Greetings printed on the front when I had it made into postcards at Office Max. I sent these to all my Jewish friends and if two people in the same family group on my list were getting cards from me, I sent this one to one family and another card that I made with a portrait of Santa Claus to the other family. I will post Santa next week.

On Friday I was invited to a Christmas luncheon by an artist friend. She had not only planned for great food and wonderful companionship with other artists, but had a project for us to do. We sat at her kitchen table with the supplies she had set out for us to introduce us to an art form called Zentangles. We each had one official Zentangle paper square, a pencil, and two pens with different line thicknesses.

First we were to put dots a little inside of each corner, then connect the dots. I went wrong right away, by making my connection "bumpy" on two of the sides instead of making it look like a "pillow shape". But she said it is okay, just have fun! Then we were to put dots on the edges of the pillow in pencil, then connect the dots across the pillow with our fine point pen so as to divide the pillow into sections. The first section was filled with lines running parallel to our section line. See my upper left and lower right bumps. Then in the same section to go across those lines to make diamond shapes. Then fill in every other line of diamonds with our thicker point pen. Next we picked another area and made dots in parallel lines as if you were going to play that connect- the-dots game to complete squares. See my area in the upper middle. After that we connected our dots with an "S" line, then connected the opposite sides with the same "S", which resulted in a curvy shape. Some of us then put squares in the middle of our curvy squares. And we darkened the little circles that had been the substructure for the design. Next we were to make scallops across one section. I got that all mixed up! I was to make the same scallop shape one on top of the other and then darken with the thick point, every other row. I went around my perimeter by mistake with the scallops, which did not keep their "scallopy" shape. So when it came time to darken alternating rows, I ran into areas where two white scallops or dark scallops met. That meant I started randomly darkening areas and so it looks like Indian Corn instead of a reoccurring pattern which I think is one of the main ideas of Zentangle. See two "bumps" top and bottom.
Next section we were to draw a set of parallel lines in a slight curve across that section. Then continue with sets of lines but never going over that top set. We continued to fill that section with parallel lines. Then we filled in the open areas with"bubbles" or small circles. See lower middle section. After that everyone else was done but I had areas that were still open, so I just followed the lines of the open areas to make a maze effect. The other artists were adding some pencil to have more values. So I started to fill in, with pencil, some of my maze lines. Again I ran into the problem of having a darkened area meet another already darkened area that would lessen the effect of contrast!

This was a lot of fun and took us about an hour to do. After I got home, I researched Zentangles on Google. The originators of the craze are Richard Roberts and Maria Thomas. The website if you want to find out all about it is http://www.zentangle.com .

Also, there are many patterns which have specific names and their creators name are listed with them. There are also challenges just like on the Daily Paintworks site.

Artist Block Leads to Somewhere

See that little sketch up there? I did that a few weeks ago. Before that I hadn't picked up any brush or pencil in about 11 months. It's a horrible place for an artist to find herself in. One minute I've finished attending an amazing game changing seminar that pretty much spells out exactly what I need to do to get approach and get into galleries....the next 11 months I'm paralyzed with fear and overwhelmed with all the tasks I imagine to the point I am unable to set foot in the studio.

Today while I was out of state visiting my Aunt and Uncle in Denver, Colorado we were walking down their street and decided to pop into one of the galleries we passed. Inside I chatted with the gallerist and inquired if she herself was also an artist. We talked some more and eventually it came out that I was an Illinois Watercolorist. She asked if I ever blogged and if I did it regularly. I said "I have..." She asked me if I had ever heard of the website Contemporary Fine Art International. I said "I think I'm on it..." She shook her head no and asked me my name. I replied "Shoshanna Bauer." Her eyes lit up and she said "YES!" She had offerd me a free membership back then to help them start up the website (because at the time I was regularly painting and blogging) and then I had done nothing with it.

I was ashamed and embarrassed and at the same time I was in shock that she remembered my name but that I was here in Denver (a city I have always wanted to live and have work in) and she remembered me. It felt like some kind of sign. My Aunt and Uncle were pretty surprised as well.

So here I am, blogging about my block. I may not have any recent art to post but at least this is a start. I know there has got to be other artists out there who have experienced what I'm going through. Maybe one of them has already gotten to the other side and learned how to be successful despite the fears and feelings of overwhelming. Maybe by posting this it will help me get to the other side and one day an artist will read this and see "Hey it's not just me..."

Either way this is a good thing and I intend to take this serendipitous meeting with the gallerist/artist/blogger and take it as a sign that I was once doing everything right and that what I do in the future will also continue to be right.

Here is my painting for my “Picasso It” Challenge.

It is called “Taos Girl At Horno, Picasso-style”
A horno is the proper name of the bake ovens at the Taos Pueblo. I took this picture while on vacation in 2009.
I got the design by cutting apart the photo that I had printed out and then trying various placements on the 6 x 6 panel.
I think putting the name of the artist chosen in the title is an important part of the challenge.

I am proud to say that I had four paintings accepted into the Randy Higbee 6 Inch Squared National Juried show in Costa Mesa, Ca.

I tried something a little different here. As I sat watching television, I drew on my canvas different things I like or enjoy. A heart, fish(in a pond!), a cup of coffee, the telephone,my green tile kitchen counter,trees with the leaves drawn in house shapes, a rose, the wind, a rainbow and the star with various triangle and circles. As I drew each one, I turned the canvas 1/4 of the way around to the right. I hope you enjoy some of these things, too. This can be hung either vertically or horizontally. See below. This is in the black frame,against my natural oak floor. The colors in this bottom pix don't seem as accurate, I think I took this picture in a different place and at a different time of day.

These black rubber sandals are my "go to" shoes all year long. I have had them for about 3 years and they are so comfortable that I wear them all summer. In the cold weather I remove my "outdoor" shoes when I come home, and my socks and put my Okabashi on. Here they are modeled with my pajama bottoms..it is Sunday after all! :)

Today's painting was done from life, but not an alive elephant at Cabela's in Hoffman Estates, IL. I arrived at 7:40AM, twenty minutes ahead of schedule with all my paraphernalia. Even though what I considered a rush hour time of day, it only took me twenty minutes from my home in Lake Zurich. So I tilted my seat back and listened to the radio. It was a cold 30% morning and the sun had a mist around it. I was trying to decide how I would paint the sky if I were doing Plein air. But I digress.

None of the other artists had arrived as far as I could see. I had noticed employees arriving in those twenty minutes. At eight I went to the front door. There was a maintenance man there and he told me to go to the staff entrance because the store didn't open until 9AM and the front door was locked. So I went, it was locked, so I knocked on the window with my sun glasses because no one had come when I knocked with my knuckles! At last! A young woman opened it and I told her I was one of the painters who were to go to the second floor. She called someone on her walkie-talkie(is that what they are called now???) and said" The painters are here for the second floor". I said "OH! We are not wall painters we are artists here to paint the animals." So then she called another person who said I should go to the conference room. After asking where it was I took the elevator up to the second floor.

HOW COOL! A rocky mountain with waterfalls and with life-size bears, deer, coyote, turkey, moose, elk, fox, mountain goats,eagle,etc.,etc. I put down all my painting stuff and started taking pictures. At the far end I discovered the safari animals. Wow! So neat...Lions, Gazelle,Rhino Elephant,Water Buffalo, and so on. More picture taking. All the animals had labels and a couple of facts about them. By this time a staff member walked by and told me that even though Cabela's is a sportsmen's store, they are also considered a museum and do tours for groups large and small. He told me there was a tunnel through the mountain with fish tanks holding local types of freshwater fish. After he left I called one of my artists friends and found out that since the store didn't actually open until 9AM and they hadn't been able to get in, they had gone for coffee and would see me soon. I decided to go downstairs and see the fish. As I walked by all the staff members who were getting their morning update, a woman stopped me to inquire who I was. It turns out they shouldn't have let me in. But all was explained and I was setting up and ready to paint by the time the other six artists arrived. I took my time drawing my elephant, painted til lunch, then finished up early afternoon.

I am so glad to find out about Cabela's as I had missed going there with another group of artists earlier this year.

The Daily Paintworks challenge this week is to use a reference picture to form your own group of people from all the subjects in the reference crowd scene. I changed the scene by eliminating the umbrellas, and putting people from three different tables together. I brought the windows and flower boxes down to the lower level of the building.

These pumpkins are the second 10 minute challenge from Carol Marine. The object is to paint one still life object 8 times. Each time you do it you are allowed 10 minutes to paint the subject. When your timer rings, you must stop. As you can see from my pumpkins, each time you paint it, you have made decisions about what you want to accomplish or change in each one. I started quite large and ended large. I changed some colors along the way, too. By the end I pretty much knew what I wanted to say. Does this mean I must paint everything 8 times before I get a satisfactory painting?? No, it means though that I should paint as much as possible and really analyze my still life for its' shapes, colors and values before I jump into the painting. I mixed my pools of color before I started the timer so that I wouldn't waste time experimenting.

When I enlarged it to see it better, I saw this beautiful carved wooden and massive doorway at the top of the stairs. It is draped with a canopy and side panels in lush fabric. I was attracted the the doorway and curved stonework over the door as well as the light on the side of the building leading up to the entry. To me it is in an Italian city. This is the Sept 10, 2011 weekly challenge from the Daily Paintworks site. The project involves using 4 values to design your painting. How to "Keep it simple". Not as easy as it would seem! Nonetheless, I enjoyed the challenge and realize how valuable it is to learn to decipher the different values in your 2D composition to make it as realistic as the original scene. I used Burnt Sienna and white and plan to finish the painting in colors natural to the actual landscape. This photo was taken in Busse Woods, near Schaumburg, Ill on the North side of Route 72.

I actually finished this painting on Monday last, but then tried something new...spraying it with fixative. I learned that it definitely darkened it, which can change the values somewhat. I also learned that if you use charcoal as your black, it blurs out with the moisture. So after completing all my work this week with painters, plumbers, and carpet cleaners for selling the townhouse, I finally worked on it again to fix values, add highlights and make the black cat a little less of a puddle! So now I am posting it on The Daily Paintworks site as my entry into last Saturdays challenge which was superstitions. This one is about never opening an umbrella in the house and black cats crossing under...things??. I am not really superstitious, however, I am cautious about not stepping on a crack in the sidewalk and possibly breaking my mother's back!!!! (Step on the crack, break your mother's back!). I read that only 1 in 20 adults avoid cracks in the pavement...wow...I feel really special, LOL!

Fourth of July weekend, my fellow artist friend ,Tina, invited me and another artist friend to her house for painting and a barbecue. We arrived early afternoon...twoish, and starting setting up our easels. Tina asked me what I had brought to paint as a still life. "I thought you would have the still life for us!", I said incredulously!" How ungrateful I was! She had made three stations, one for each of us, and all I had to do was to have something to paint. Well, she offered us a drink of a delicious peach tea she had made and garnished with peach slices and cantaloupe. AHA! I will paint my glass of tea against one of Tina's pretty fabrics in the background. A different glass of tea was consumed several times during my painting efforts as it was a hot day even in her air conditioned "Vitamin D" room,(studio with floor to ceiling windows). After we finished our paintings, Tina had prepared a delicious dinner...cheese burgers(she barbecued herself), tomato salad, cold slaw, home- made potato salad(my contribution), and Maria the other artist had made several delicious chocolate desserts..frozen banana dipped in chocolate ganache, pound cake in ganache, and Fromage Blanc that she made herself topped with chocolate and fresh blueberries and strawberries. There was lots of wine and great conversation, too! A wonderful party.

In June I celebrated my birthday with my son, Louis, his wife Amy and there adorable 3 year old, Enzo. They prepared a whole celebration for me with dinner and a delicious red velvet cake. They insisted I take the remaining cake home with me even though they are three and and I am one. So the next day when I went to the Mainstreet Art Centre to paint, I took the one-half remaining cake to share with my fellow artists. However the plan was to paint it first. So I got about two thirds of the way finished with the still life and it was break time. We usually listen to an instructor talk about a specific painting subject like values or edges or about an artist that may be of interest. We all gather around and have a cup of coffee or tea and whatever treats people have brought in. I decided to share the cake at that time instead after lunch, because many of the morning artists would have left. Well, the cake was really enjoyed...but it was now a small piece and I had begun the painting with one-half a cake. When I went back to my painting, I just could not seem to finish it properly......so here are the remains of the day!

Ah! Remember Spring...I think it lasted about two minutes! Well, these lovely ladies were in small pots on my front step/planter area. I just returned from a week away at The Clearing Folk Art School in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin. I took an excellent oil/pastel workshop from Frankie Johnson and was also there while the Door County Plein Air Festival was going on. Anyway, I digress...When i returned i found all my potted plants to be burned to a pulp by the incredibly hot and humid weather that the Chicago area had during the past week. So even though my pansies had gotten a little leggy the first of July, I had cut them back to rejuvenate them and kept up the watering and some fertilizer. But to no avail!! They are officially over! But you may have them forever..what a deal!

This is the latest Daily Paintworks Challenge. Wrap up a present and paint it. Well, as it happens today is my birthday and on Tuesday afternoon a box arrived from my ex-sister-in-law. I opened the box and this lovely present was in it. So I painted the gift box along with the really beautiful card. The card has sparkles on it...I just love anything that sparkles. After a Thai dinner at my son's house tonight with my daughter-in-law and my adorable grandson, age three, we opened presents. In this box there was a beautiful little bird, actually about life size and a wonderful candle with a bird, nest and flowers reverse painted on the glass. Two additions to my collection for future paintings. Although I don't get to see my sister-in-law much anymore,
I always think of her fondly and remember the good times we had together when we were as close as true sisters.

This painting was a lot of fun, and I get to eat the potatoes! I will dress up the Idaho with butter and cream cheese after cooking in the microwave for 10 minutes. The red I might cook and put into an olive oil, vinegar, garlic and salt dressing. The sweet potato will be good baked with cinnamon and butter.

Hi, I'm back! I was away, then no internet and TV service the next day, then some blogging problems which my son helped me with tonight.

I saw this beautiful cup at Dominick's and just had to buy it since it has my favorite colors and they are in polka-dots!! The red enameled coffee pot and the pear added the extra color and completed the "story".
